wrench turns. We trace hard starts, power loss, and rough running to the root cause, explain the fix in plain terms, then repair the engine right the first time for drivers across northeast Georgia.","quick_answer":"Diesel engine repair finds the true cause of hard starts, power loss, smoke, or rough running, then fixes that cause instead of replacing parts at random.","seo_description":"Diesel engine repair in Commerce, GA that starts with a real diagnosis, not a guess. Root-cause fixes, explained before we start.","support_content":[{"type":"qa","answer":"Watch for extended cranking before start-up, white or black exhaust smoke under load, knocking or ticking that rises with rpm, coolant or oil loss without a visible leak, and power loss on hills. A check engine light with a low-power or limp mode is another flag. Any one of these deserves a real diagnosis before parts get replaced.","question":"What signs mean my diesel engine needs repair?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"Guessing is expensive. A bad injector, a weak cylinder, and a failing head gasket can all feel like the same power loss from the driver's seat. Compression tests, cylinder balance checks, and fault code review tell us which one it is. Repairing the root cause the first time saves the cost of the wrong part installed on a hunch.","question":"Why diagnose before repairing a diesel engine?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"Sometimes, and sometimes it makes the damage worse. Rough running from one weak cylinder can usually wait a few days. Metal in the oil, coolant in the cylinders, or overheating cannot, because continued running turns a head gasket job into a bottom-end rebuild. Call the shop and describe the symptom before deciding to keep driving.","question":"Can I drive my diesel until the engine repair is done?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"Most jobs of this kind depend on what the diagnosis finds. A cylinder head or injector-related repair often runs one to three days once parts are on hand. Internal bottom-end work or an in-frame rebuild takes longer because of teardown, measuring, and machining time. We give you a timeline after the diagnosis, not before.","question":"How long does a typical diesel engine repair take?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"Check the oil level and condition, note whether coolant is full and clean, and jot down when the symptom happens: cold start, warm start, under load, or at idle. Fresh fuel matters too, since poor fuel mimics engine trouble. Note the mileage and any prior repairs. A compression test on a healthy diesel should show roughly 350 to 450 PSI per cylinder, and low, uneven numbers point us straight to the problem cylinder.","question":"What can I check myself before bringing the truck in?"}]},{"h1":"Turbo Replacement in Commerce, GA","name":"Turbo Replacement","slug":"turbo-replacement","included":["Boost pressure and shaft-play testing to confirm the turbo is the real failure","Oil feed and drain line inspection before the new turbo goes on","Removal of the failed turbo and cleaning of mounting surfaces","New turbo installation with fresh gaskets and correct torque sequence","Post-install boost leak check and test drive","Plain-language explanation of what failed and how to prevent a repeat"],"key_facts":{"contact":"(678) 531-3504, 100 Pottery Rd, Commerce, GA","materials":"OEM-spec replacement turbos, gaskets, and oil feed hardware","areas_served":"Commerce, GA and nearby towns like Jefferson and Athens"},"seo_title":"Turbo Replacement in Commerce | North Georgia","description":"North Georgia Truck and Diesel Service replaces turbos on pickups and work trucks in Commerce, GA, with most swaps finished the same week. We inspect the oil feed and drain lines, check the intercooler and charge pipes for oil or debris, then set the new unit with fresh gaskets. Before you get keys back, we verify boost pressure with a gauge and road test under load.","question":"What happens on install day?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"Often, yes. Replacement makes more sense when teardown shows worn clutches, damaged gears, or contamination that has spread past one circuit. We measure line pressure and slip first, then lay out both options with numbers, so the decision is yours and it is an informed one.","question":"Should I repair or replace a failing transmission?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"The cross and bearing caps are separate parts, so a worn u-joint can be pressed out and a new one installed without replacing the whole shaft. A full driveshaft replacement comes into play when the yoke is twisted, the tube is bent, or the shaft will not stay in balance. We check runout and balance before recommending either path, and we explain which part actually failed.","question":"Can a bad u-joint be fixed without a new driveshaft?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"Most differentials run SAE 75W-90 or 75W-140 gear oil with a GL-5 rating, and the right choice depends on the axle manufacturer's spec and whether the truck tows heavy. Limited-slip units need a friction modifier or a fluid that already carries it. Mixing specs thins protection under heat, so we match the oil to the axle book, not the shelf label.","question":"What gear oil goes in a diesel truck differential?"},{"type":"qa","answer":"Tire and wheel problems usually show up as a shake you feel in the steering wheel at one steady speed. Driveline vibration tends to rise under acceleration and ease off when you lift. Checking driveshaft runout, which should sit under about 0.010 inch, and inspecting u-joints for play separates the two. Worn injectors, a dragging turbo, clogged filters, or a tired fuel pump all feel like low power, and a tune cannot fix worn parts. A truck that commutes all week and tows on weekends does best with a conservative tune matched to its hardware, with exhaust gas temps held near 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit to protect the turbo. Every household here is rural, and most properties are farmsteads or single-family homes on acreage rather than subdivisions. The Banks County School District anchors the community, and the annual Easter egg hunt that once set a world record still draws thousands to town each spring. Farms around Homer raise cattle and poultry and run the trucks that go with them. US 441 connects the town straight to Commerce, so a truck at our shop is rarely more than fifteen minutes from home.","service_focus":"Farmland work punishes diesel fuel systems. Tanks sit half-empty in humid Georgia air, filters strain through field dust, and a injector problem that starts as a rough idle ends as a truck that will not pull a loaded trailer. Fuel System Repair is the job we do most for Homer owners, and it usually begins with diagnostics rather than parts-swapping. Heavy Duty Truck Repair matters here too, because cattle and feed hauling do not stop for a breakdown. Fleet Diesel Service covers the small operators running two or three trucks, keeping them on a maintenance schedule instead of waiting for the next failure on a county road.","why_choose_us_for_city":"Homer has no diesel shop of its own, so the choice is a long tow to Gainesville or a short drive to Commerce. Our location on Pottery Road sits almost straight down US 441, which means a farm truck can limp in under its own power more often than not. We know the working pattern of Banks County trucks: high idle hours, towing most weeks, fuel that sits through winter. That shapes the diagnosis. Rental properties add a lease on top of that. Major repairs are simpler at a shop, which is why most Athens owners bring the truck to us instead.","question":"Are there local rules about working on a diesel truck at an Athens rental?"},{"answer":"Age and mileage change the repair decision, not the possibility. The city and Clarke County merged into one consolidated government, and the population sits well above 128,000, which makes Athens the sixth-largest city in Georgia. Downtown stacks music venues next to the North Campus, while Normaltown, Georgian Hills, Ashton Place, and Westwood Hills hold older neighborhoods where trucks stay in the family for years. Students bring hand-me-down diesels; faculty and tradespeople keep daily drivers well past 200,000 miles. Athens sits about 70 miles northeast of Atlanta, with Jefferson, Watkinsville, and Winterville close by, so a truck that survives Athens streets usually works the whole region.","neighborhoods":["Normaltown","Georgian Hills","Ashton Place","Westwood Hills"],"service_focus":"A college town is hard on diesels in a specific way: trucks are older, budgets are tighter, and nobody replaces a vehicle one good repair would save. That puts Fuel Injector Service and Cooling System Repair at the center of the Athens workload, because worn injectors and tired cooling systems are what sideline a high-mileage pickup. Check Engine Light Diagnostics matters just as much here, since a used diesel throws codes constantly and guessing at them wastes money a student or commuter does not have. Diagnosis comes first, the fix is explained in plain terms, and the work follows in the order it should.","why_choose_us_for_city":"Athens has plenty of general shops, but diesel diagnosis is a narrower skill, and the nearest dedicated diesel options often mean a longer trip toward Atlanta or Gainesville. The shop on Pottery Road in Commerce sits close enough that an Athens truck can be dropped off on a weekday morning without rearranging the day. The city grew where the old Unicoi Turnpike crossed the Tugaloo watershed, and the terrain still matters: hills, two-lane roads, and long distances between fuel stops put steady strain on engines, turbos, and cooling systems. A population of about 9,000 supports a working economy of farms, small businesses, and drivers who commute toward Athens or the upstate for work. Owners around Toccoa Falls and the surrounding countryside run pickups and haulers that work harder than the odometer suggests.","service_focus":"Distance shapes diesel work in Toccoa. A truck that dies in the foothills faces a long tow either direction, so owners here want problems caught before they strand a load. Check engine light diagnostics find the small fault before it becomes the big one, and a diesel tune up keeps fuel economy where it should be across all those miles. When something does fail, diesel engine repair done with a clear test and explanation gets the truck back on the road without guesswork.","why_choose_us_for_city":"Toccoa owners have solid local mechanics, but diesel-specific work often means hauling a truck all the way to Atlanta or Greenville, a half day gone before anything is fixed. The shop in Commerce sits close by, one trip up 123 or through Danielsville, and it is built for diesels: heavy duty truck repair, pickup diesel maintenance, and fleet diesel service under one roof. Lots split into acreage, small farms, and job sites spread along county roads keep pickup trucks and trailers busy every week. The city covers just over three square miles, yet the address pulls from the whole county. Watkinsville sits close enough to Athens and the University of Georgia that many residents commute, while others run contracting, landscaping, and hauling businesses based at home. Until 1875 this was part of Clarke County, and the town still reads as an old Georgia seat: a courthouse square, a walkable main street, and neighborhoods that thin quickly into countryside where trucks do real work.","service_focus":"Diesel work in Watkinsville centers on trucks that earn their keep. A landscaping crew's pickup that tows a trailer every day needs Pickup Diesel Maintenance on a schedule, not a breakdown call in the middle of a job week. Trades trucks run modified and loaded, so Turbo Replacement and boost-side work come up often once mileage climbs past the point where a stock setup starts leaking. Fuel Injector Service matters too, because a rough-running injector on a truck that hauls materials turns into a dead cylinder and a stalled job. The work here is less about highway fleets and more about owner-operators who cannot afford downtime during the workweek.","why_choose_us_for_city":"Watkinsville sits roughly twenty minutes from the shop, close enough that a truck can be dropped off in the morning and worked the same day. What sets the shop apart from a general repair place in town is the diesel focus: the tools, the test equipment, and the habit of measuring before replacing. Athens shops are geared toward commuters and students, and dealership service departments are not set up for a working diesel on a short clock. The rail line that put Flowery Branch on the map in 1874 still runs through town, remembered at the Historic Train Depot and the Historic Caboose exhibit. Diesel particulate filters need sustained highway speeds to complete a regen cycle, and short trips around town never finish one. Soot accumulates, restriction codes set, and the light comes on. On a diesel it usually points to something that affects how the engine breathes, fuels, or cleans its own exhaust. The most common triggers are glow plug faults, injector balance rates drifting out of range, EGR flow codes, DPF restriction, and boost leaks. This guide comes from North Georgia Truck and Diesel Service in Commerce.\n\nThe light also has two personalities. A steady light means the computer saw a fault and stored a code. A flashing light means an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalyst or DPF, and that one should stop you from driving the truck hard. Both deserve a read with a diesel-capable scan tool, because the code number narrows the problem long before any parts come off."},{"h2":"The light came on but the truck feels fine","body":"This is the trap. Diesel engines are built to run through problems, so the truck can feel normal while the computer has already logged a fault. An EGR valve sticking partway, an intake air sensor drifting, or one weak injector can all trigger a code without changing how the drive feels on US-441.\n\nThe risk is slow damage. An ignored EGR fault soots up the intake. A fuel code left alone can score an injector bore. Pull the codes early and you usually fix a sensor or clean a valve. Wait until the truck drives badly and the repair list grows. A steady light with no symptoms is still worth a same-week look, not a wait-and-see."},{"h2":"You have other symptoms along with the light","body":"Some lights ride along with changes you can feel, and those pairings tell you where to look. Rough idle or a lope at startup with a light points to injector balance or glow plugs. Loss of power uphill with black smoke suggests a boost leak or a stuck-vane turbo acting up.\n\nHard starts on cold mornings lean toward glow plugs or fuel supply. A light plus a regen cycle that never completes points at the DPF or its sensors. Writing down what changed, when it started, and whether it happens cold or hot cuts diagnostic time. That note is often the fastest path from a stored code to the actual failed part."},{"h2":"Six quick checks before you drive it anywhere","body":"You do not need a scan tool to rule out a few easy causes. Park safely, let the engine cool, and run through this list:\n\n1. Look under the truck for fresh fuel, coolant, or oil drips and note where they sit.\n2. Check that the fuel cap is tight and the filler neck is not cracked or caked with dirt.\n3. Squeeze or inspect visible rubber boost and vacuum lines for cracks, especially near the intercooler.\n4. Glance at the exhaust while a helper revs the engine, watching for heavy black or blue smoke.\n5. Make sure the engine oil is on the full mark and does not smell of fuel.\n6. Write down any codes a store-bought reader shows, plus the mileage and conditions when the light appeared.\n\nAnything you find is useful information for the tech who reads codes next."},{"h2":"EGR and DPF faults that hide behind the light","body":"Diesels clean their own exhaust, and those systems generate a large share of check engine codes. The EGR valve recirculates exhaust to cut combustion temperatures. It moves through soot all day, so it sticks. A flow code or a valve performance code usually means the valve, its cooler, or its control circuit needs attention.\n\nThe DPF traps soot and burns it off during regen. Short trip driving in and around Commerce never lets a full regen finish, so ash builds up and restriction codes follow. Sensors before and after the filter feed the decision, and a failed sensor can fake a clogged filter. The right move is testing the sensor readings against actual backpressure, not throwing a filter at the code."},{"h2":"Fuel and air faults that trip the light","body":"Fuel delivery is the other big family of diesel light triggers. Injectors wear, their balance rates drift, and the computer flags a contribution code for the cylinder running weak. Water in the fuel, common in Georgia humid months, trips the water-in-fuel light and can damage injectors fast if the separator is ignored.\n\nOn the air side, boost leaks make the turbo work harder and lean out cylinders. A cracked charge pipe, a split boot, or a failing boost sensor can all store codes. The diagnostic step is the same either way: read fuel rail pressures and boost targets under load, compare them to what the truck commands, and let the numbers name the part."},{"h2":"Findings that turn the fix into a shop job","body":"Some findings end the do-it-yourself path immediately. A flashing light, heavy smoke under load, metal or coolant in the fuel bowl, a water-in-fuel warning that will not clear, or codes for injector contribution and DPF restriction all need shop equipment. North Georgia Truck and Diesel Service at 100 Pottery Rd in Commerce, GA traces most of these symptoms back to a short list of parts.\n\nThe usual causes are a slow leak at a hose, radiator seam, or reservoir, a thermostat stuck closed, a water pump losing flow, or a head gasket letting combustion pressure into the coolant. Diesels run high cylinder pressure, so a failed gasket or seal often shows itself in the cooling system before the engine complains.\n\nCatch the trouble at the reservoir or the gauge and the fix is usually a part. Catch it after a hot shutdown on I-85 and the repair gets much bigger."},{"h2":"Coolant level that keeps dropping","body":"A reservoir that needs topping off every few weeks is a leak, not a quirk. Diesels hold a large coolant volume, so a slow seep can hide for a long time while the level keeps walking down. Check the cold level mark with the engine off and cool, then check again after a week of normal driving.\n\nLook for crust or colored streaks near hose clamps, the water pump weep hole, and the reservoir cap. A puddle under the front of the truck after sitting overnight points to the radiator or a lower hose. No visible leak with a dropping level is a different problem, covered below, and it needs a pressure test rather than more antifreeze."},{"h2":"White smoke or a sweet smell from the exhaust","body":"Coolant that reaches a combustion chamber burns white and sweet. On a cold morning, a little white vapor is normal condensation. Smoke that continues after warm-up, or a sweet smell in the cab or behind the truck, points to a head gasket, a cracked head, or a failed EGR cooler on engines that have one.\n\nThis sign matters more than any other on this page. Combustion pressure pushed into the cooling system also pressurizes hoses and can warp an aluminum head. Stop driving it hard, watch the gauge, and get it tested. A block test or a pressure check will confirm whether coolant and combustion are meeting."},{"h2":"Gauge climbing at idle, dropping on the road","body":"Temperature that rises in traffic and falls again at highway speed is a classic airflow problem. At speed, ram air pushes through the radiator. At idle, only the fan moves air, so a fan clutch that has quit, a missing shroud, or a radiator plugged with bugs and chaff shows up first at a stop light or a job site.\n\nDiesels idling in summer heat near Athens or Gainesville run this test on themselves every day. Watch the gauge after ten minutes of idle. If it climbs several degrees above its normal reading and drops once you are moving again, start with the fan and the radiator face before assuming the worst."},{"h2":"Checks you can make yourself","body":"With the engine cold, a few minutes of looking answers most of the easy questions.\n\n1. Check the reservoir level against the cold mark.\n2. Squeeze the upper radiator hose: soft, swollen, or cracked means replace it.\n3. Look under the truck after it sits overnight for coolant puddles or crust.\n4. Inspect the radiator face for mud, bugs, or bent fins blocking airflow.\n5. Run the heater at full heat: weak cabin heat often means low coolant or a failing thermostat.\n6. They do not replace a pressure test or a block test, but they tell you what to report."},{"h2":"Coolant that looks wrong","body":"Pop the reservoir cap cold and look at the coolant itself. Healthy coolant is a clean color with no film. Rusty brown points to internal corrosion, often after the additive package in older coolant has worn out. An oily film or sludge means oil and coolant are mixing, which happens with an oil cooler or head gasket failure.\n\nA milky appearance under the oil cap or on the dipstick is the reverse cross-contamination and is worse. Neither condition is fixed by a flush alone. Find what put the oil or rust in the system first, then replace the contaminated coolant, or it comes right back."},{"h2":"Overheating under load only","body":"A truck that stays cool empty and overheats towing a trailer up a grade has a capacity problem, not a constant failure. Common causes are a partially plugged radiator, a fan clutch that slips under load, a tired water pump, or a thermostat that opens too slowly.\n\nThe pattern tells you which. Backing off the throttle brings the gauge down fastest when airflow or coolant flow is marginal. Air in the system from a recent repair or a slow leak acts the same way, because the pocket steams and blocks flow at the hottest point. If your Duramax, Power Stroke, or Cummins threw a shaft seal, chewed its bearings, or started pushing oil into the intercooler, this is the fix that returns the truck to how it ran before the failure.\n\nThe work is straightforward in sequence. We verify the turbo failed and find out why, since metal in the oil feed or a clogged air filter will kill the new unit too. Then the old turbo comes off, the oil feed and return lines get cleaned or replaced, and the new unit goes on with fresh gaskets.\n\nDone right, a replacement costs you nothing in drivability. Boost comes up the same, the engine makes the same power, and fuel economy stays where it was. For a daily driver or a work truck still under its intended use, that is usually the whole job."},{"h2":"What a turbo upgrade changes about your truck","body":"An upgrade swaps the stock turbo for a unit with larger wheels, different housing geometry, or both. The goal is more airflow. More airflow means the engine can burn more fuel cleanly, which shows up as higher boost ceilings, cooler exhaust gas temperatures, and better behavior under a heavy trailer.\n\nThe tradeoffs are real. A bigger turbo typically spools later, so there can be more lag off idle. Supporting parts matter: an upgrade that doubles airflow without fueling, tuning, and exhaust work to match delivers a truck that hesitates and runs hot. We look at the whole intake path, including the intercooler and boost pipes, before recommending one.\n\nAn upgrade also changes how the engine works under load. Exhaust gas temperatures run different, oil temps shift, and the transmission sees different torque. Done as a matched system, that is fine. Done as a bolt-on with no plan, it shortens engine life."},{"h2":"How to choose between a replacement and an upgrade","body":"| Factor | Stock replacement | Performance upgrade |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Goal | Factory reliability | More boost and airflow |\n| Spool and lag | Same as stock | Often later spool |\n| Supporting work | Oil lines and filters | Tuning, fueling, exhaust |\n| Best fit | Daily driving, stock use | Towing heavy, hauling, power builds |\n\nIf the truck does what it always did and the turbo simply failed, replace it. A daily commute from Commerce to Gainesville, a farm truck, a work pickup: a like-for-like unit keeps the engine in its factory comfort zone and the repair focused.\n\nAn upgrade fits when the engine is already being pushed past stock, or when you are pulling heavy loads through the North Georgia hills and exhaust gas temps are the limiting factor. It makes sense as part of a build, with tuning and fueling addressed together.\n\nThe honest answer for most failures we see at our shop on Pottery Road is a replacement. If you want the upgrade conversation anyway, we will tell you what else the truck needs to support it before we quote anything."},{"h2":"Why the turbo failed matters more than which one you buy","body":"Installing either turbo into a sick system wastes the part. Bearings do not fail for no reason. Restricted oil feed lines, clogged air filters, a failing PCV system pushing oil where it should not go, or debris from a prior failure will take out a new turbo in short order.\n\nBefore we touch either option, we pull the reason the old one died. That means cutting open the old oil filter, inspecting the intake tract, checking for shaft play patterns, and testing oil pressure to the feed line. If the compressor wheel ate itself, we check the intercooler for debris before it gets ingested by the fresh unit.\n\nThis step is the same whether you chose a stock replacement or an upgrade. It is also the step most likely to save you from doing the job twice. Ask any shop you talk to what they found as the root cause, and be wary of one that skips the question."},{"h2":"Signs the turbo decision cannot wait","body":"Some symptoms mean the turbo is already on borrowed time. Whining that rises with boost, blue or gray smoke on acceleration, oil pooled in the intercooler pipes, and a check engine light with underboost codes all point at it. Metal flakes in the oil are worse. That means the bearings are shedding, and every hour of running spreads contamination through the engine.\n\nDriving on a failing turbo risks more than the turbo. A seized shaft can starve the engine of oil or send pieces into the cylinders. What starts as a bolt-off job becomes an engine rebuild.\n\nIf you are seeing any of this, park the truck and get it looked at. It announces itself in small changes: a longer crank in the morning, a haze of smoke at startup that lingers, a shake at idle that was not there last month, or a truck that feels flat pulling a load up 441. North Georgia Truck and Diesel Service in Commerce wrote this guide on signs you need diesel engine repair and when to call a pro.\n\nThese changes usually trace back to a short list of causes. Fuel delivery is the most common, because a diesel lives on precise injection pressure and timing. Injectors that dribble instead of atomizing, a lift pump getting weak, or air leaking into the fuel lines all show up as hard starts and rough running.\n\nWear is the second cause. Rings, valves, and cylinder walls lose their seal over years of work, and compression drops with them.\n\nHeat and load speed both problems up. Towing, long idles, and summer traffic around Commerce and Jefferson work a diesel harder than a short commute does. Catching the early signs leaves you more repair options than waiting until the engine will not start at all, which is the whole point of the checks below."},{"h2":"Hard Starts That Keep Getting Longer to Crank","body":"A healthy diesel fires within a second or two of the key turning. When cranking stretches to three, four, or five seconds, and gets worse over weeks, fuel or compression is not where it should be.\n\nThe usual suspects, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the problem: air in the fuel lines, usually from a filter seal or a fitting that lets fuel drain back overnight. Injectors that leak down or no longer hold rail pressure between runs. Glow plugs or the glow control circuit, which matter most on cold mornings.\n\nLow compression from worn rings or tight valves is further down the list but more serious, and it shows up as long cranking when the engine is cold plus smoke once it catches.\n\nA quick pattern check helps narrow it. Slow starts only on cold mornings point at the glow system. Slow starts hot or cold move fuel drain-back and injectors up. Write the pattern down before you call, because it saves diagnostic time."},{"h2":"Exhaust Smoke That Changed Color","body":"Diesel exhaust should be nearly invisible once the engine warms up. Smoke you can see is fuel, oil, or coolant burning where it should not be, and the color names which.\n\nBlack smoke means too much fuel for the air going in. A clogged air filter, leaking boost pipes, a tired turbo, or injectors dumping too much can all cause it. A puff under hard acceleration is common on many diesels. A constant cloud is not.\n\nWhite smoke that hangs around after warmup points to unburned fuel or coolant entering the cylinders. Coolant in the combustion chamber often comes with a sweet smell and a reservoir level that keeps dropping for no visible reason.\n\nBlue or blue-gray smoke means oil is burning. Worn rings, valve seals, or turbo seals are letting oil past where it belongs.\n\nColor alone does not finish a diagnosis, but it narrows the list fast. Note when the smoke appears: cold start, warm idle, or under load. That detail often separates a fuel system fix from an internal engine repair."},{"h2":"Power Loss Under Load or on a Grade","body":"Every diesel loses a little pace over the years, but a real drop feels different. The truck hesitates when you roll into the throttle, downshifts more than it used to on the same hill, or will not hold highway speed with a trailer behind it.\n\nDiesel power is a balance of fuel and air. When either side drops, output drops with it. On the fuel side: a plugged filter, weak injectors, or a lift pump falling behind. On the air side: a restricted air filter, a leaking boost pipe or intercooler boot, or a turbo no longer making the boost it used to.\n\nLeaking boost plumbing is one of the most common causes and one of the most straightforward to fix, because the engine never sees the air the turbo is making. If the check engine light is on alongside the power loss, the stored codes usually point straight at the system falling short. Either way, power loss under load is a sign worth acting on, not a quirk to live with."},{"h2":"Rough Idle or New Shaking at a Stop","body":"A diesel idle should be steady and rhythmic. New shaking, surging, or a knock that changes with RPM means one or more cylinders are not contributing the way they should.\n\nThe most common cause is injectors that are no longer balanced, so one cylinder gets more fuel than its neighbors. Compression differences do the same thing: a cylinder that seals poorly idles rough but may feel fine at speed. Worn engine mounts make normal vibration feel worse than it is, and old fuel or water in the fuel can make the whole engine lope at idle.\n\nWatch where it happens. Roughness only at cold idle points one direction. Roughness that never smooths out, or a knock that gets louder as the engine warms, points another.\n\nA rough idle that showed up recently is not something to tune out with the radio. It is a cylinder imbalance or a fuel problem, and both get worse the longer they run."},{"h2":"Five Checks You Can Make Before You Call","body":"You do not need a shop to gather the facts that make a diagnosis faster. Park on level ground, let the engine cool, and work through this list.\n\n1. Pull the dipstick and check the oil level and color. Sniff the rag: a diesel or fuel smell means fuel is getting into the oil.\n2. Check the coolant level in the reservoir and note the color. A level that keeps dropping with no visible leak needs attention.\n3. Watch the exhaust at three moments: cold start, warm idle, and hard acceleration. Note the color each time.\n4. Write down when symptoms happen: cold mornings only, under load only, or all the time.\n5. Check the air filter housing and intake boots for cracks or loose clamps.\n6. If a code reader is handy, write down the actual codes, not just the light.\n\nBring these notes with you. They turn a vague complaint into a starting point and often cut hours out of the diagnostic time."},{"h2":"Oil Level That Keeps Climbing or Smells Like Fuel","body":"Diesel oil should not rise between changes. If the level on the dipstick keeps creeping up, or the oil smells like fuel, an injector is likely dribbling into a cylinder and draining past the rings into the crankcase.\n\nFuel-diluted oil is quiet damage. It thins the oil, drops film strength, and lets bearings wear far faster than mileage alone would. Plenty of engines that spun a bearing ran for months on oil that smelled faintly of diesel.\n\nThe check is simple and belongs in your routine. Pull the dipstick, check the level, and smell. If the level rises or the smell shows up, stop topping off and schedule fuel injector service or a fuel system diagnosis.\n\nThis is also why a small injector leak-down is not worth ignoring. They took the time to explain why things were happening and in the order it was happening in. Also, I feel like he is fair price for the workmanship that he deliversand the customer service is upstanding. I give them a five star rating. My experience was great. I will continue to use them for anything that I might need.","rating":5,"source":"google","author_name":"Brian Jackson","published_at":"2025-04-22T23:04:22+00:00","author_photo_url":"https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/a/ACg8ocJq6E4hATB-6qeY2bNdOlp7tzgRpTJgNPEEzLsu1EI0Bzqx=s128-c0x00000000-cc-rp-mo-ba4","time_description":"a year ago"}],"version":1,"identity":{"key":"6a6e1d5917a80b005825fd03d8f5ecad7caf54dbe9deec7effc9da27277dd1bb","epoch":4,"state":"resolved","tuple":{"businessName":"north georgia truck and diesel service","contentPlaceId":"ChIJUaF1GPUD9ogRD7zsjabP2uQ","settingsPlaceId":"ChIJUaF1GPUD9ogRD7zsjabP2uQ","contentGbpPlaceId":"ChIJUaF1GPUD9ogRD7zsjabP2uQ"},"placeId":"ChIJUaF1GPUD9ogRD7zsjabP2uQ"},"aggregate":{"source":"google","placeId":"ChIJUaF1GPUD9ogRD7zsjabP2uQ","snapshotId":"56d9d892-4117-4dcd-8664-ecd5119bf4f8","identityEpoch":4,"total_reviews":9,"overall_rating":5},"snapshotId":"56d9d892-4117-4dcd-8664-ecd5119bf4f8","latestReviewAt":"2026-10-16T16:32:20+00:00"},"staticMaps":{}}
